A Review of the Book "The Runaway Smile" by Amanda Schowalter

Title: The Runaway Smile
Author: Amanda Schowalter
Publisher: Amanda Schowalter
Year: 2021
16 pages

A little kindness and a little smile goes a long way.

In her debut children's book, local Winnipeg author Amanda Schowalter tells the story of Whitney and her smile that runs away because she is being mean to her friends.

It is a well-written book that teaches the lesson of the importance of being kind to one another. It is perhaps a book that we should all take a moment to read right now. What I liked, beside the overall lesson, was that Whitney's friends showed understanding for her feelings. Instead of leaving her behind, Whitney's friends stood by her and helped her find her smile.

The illustrations by Zainab Jahangeer are very cute and really do help to give imagery to the story. I especially like the adorable smile hiding away until the lesson of kindness is learned.

I will definitely be adding this book to the children's section of my collection.
