A Review of the Book "What is God Like?" by Rachel Held Evans & Matthew Paul Turner

Title: What is God Like?
Author: Rachel Held Evans & Matthew Paul Turner
Publisher: Convergent Books
Year: 2021
17 pages

Rachel Held Evans is an author with several best selling titles who wrote about her faith, doubt, and life in the Bible Belt. She has been an inspiration to many as her words brought comfort and hope to all who read them.

Before her untimely death, she had begun putting thoughts down for a children's book, one that would be just as loving and inspirational to children as her other books were to adults. Matthew Paul Turner took on the challenge of completing the book and having it published posthumously on Rachel's behalf.

And he didn't disappoint.

In this beautifully illustrated book (illustrated by Ying Hui Tan), the question is asked "What is God Like?" and Evans answers "no one knows" with brilliant descriptions of all the places we can see and find God. My favorite portrayal is that of the three dancers, as it exudes the mysteriousness of the Holy Trinity. As well, I appreciate the various pronouns Evans uses for God.

I am especially impressed with Tan's drawings, which reflect the divine variety that is the human race.

As you turn each page and read the numerous responses to "What is God Like?", you can feel the inspiration that Evans spent her life providing to others, and the love and tenderness from Turner and Tan as they brought Rachel's dream to fruition.

If you have children who have questions about God, or if you yourself have questions (no one says adults can't read a children's book), I recommend this book as a way to start the conversation. At the very least, you will find some amazing images upon which to pause and reflect.
