End of an Era

There are some celebrity deaths that hit us harder than others. Even though we never met them, and, in reality, would never have a chance to meet them, their death is like losing a member of our family.

Personally, the deaths of Robin Williams, Betty White, and Leonard Nimoy are just a few that broke my heart over the years.

For many who live as part of the British Commonwealth, the death of Queen Elizabeth II is like losing a beloved grandparent. While not everyone may agree with the monarchy, it can't be denied the effect of Elizabeth's 70-year reign.

Having overseen fifteen prime ministers during her reign, it is the end of an era. And poor Charles, and then very likely William, will have some big shoes to fill. Her humbleness, her obvious love for the people, and her longevity will be difficult to match. I know I'm going to miss her smile, especially how she smiled at her husband and her great-grandchildren.

I wonder about what happens next. It will be interesting to watch the change in currency, the change in conversation during history classes, a change in anthem (no more "God Save the Queen"), and other things like that.

It has been seven decades since we have used the word king in reference to the British Monarchy. It's going to take some getting used to.

The Queen has died. Long live the King.
