Title: The Ghost Woods
Author: CJ Cooke
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Year: 2022
407 pages
C.J. Cooke is a well-known author but this is my first experience reading her work. I received this ARC from HarperCollins about a year ago and only just got around to reading it as I begin my foray into the world of scary stories and horror thrillers.
The Ghost Woods has two storylines that begin about six years apart. Both take place at Lichen Hall, a home for pregnant unwed women where they carry their babies to term, the babies are adopted, and then the women go on with their life. The history of Lichen Hall is full of ghost stories and folklore.
Right from the first chapter, Cooke captures your imagination, and with some fast-paced story-telling throughout the book, you easily get pulled into the various character and plot lines. The connection amongst the characters is quite unexpected and the ending is almost a relief, like you've held your breath for the entire book.
Cooke has written a really good story that captivates the imagination and engages the reader. It's a enjoyable read for anyone who enjoys a good ghost story.
